TESSA TAKES SAN FRANCISCO

Creative, powerful, talented and etherial. Tessa is all of this and so much more as you can clearly see. She totally thrills me each time we shoot together and I’m always amazed how this humorous smiley girl can go from giddy to VOUGE in the time it takes me to bring my camera to my face. She has such a commanding presence in front of the lens and that, “it” quality that defies you to look away. Tessa is a professional ballet dancer living in Vienna Austria dancing for the Wiener Staatsballett. It is no wonder she is so breath taking and at ease. The morning of the shoot she arrived bare faced and bed heady, we merely tossed a few loose curls in and applied some lip gloss before we headed for the city. Tessa and her sister slept in the backseat each with one earbud from a shared iPod playing what we now know to be the Pokemon theme song. The instant we parked she stretched, made only one comment about the cold then put that famous Tessa game face on. Needless to say I thoroughly enjoyed myself and because of Tessa… my creative tank is full. Thank you.

STYLED BIRTHDAY EDITORIAL SHOOT FOR ONE

The summer went out in a big epic glitter bomb of styled eye candy. The vibe was some good old fashion birthday festivities poolside, to celebrate being young and free. Rylee Hatch, our SWEET model for the day was no doubt the cherry on top of this project. She came 100% prepared to give me what I described for this Birthday girl character and then some. I’ve never been so impressed in all my years of shooting, she is just sooo dang good! It was so fitting that this was not just a fun colabo but also her last night in California before heading to Utah for her first year of college life. It was truly something to celebrate.

We thrifted for several of the garments, hand painted the canvas backdrop, borrowed an inflatable flamingo (duh), hunted for the perfect pool location, wrangled in local baked pastries for props and were seriously thrilled to have on board Katie Sanchez for hair design! Oh my God, Katie Sanchez (faint)! She is the owner of Zimbali Salon and spa in Granite bay and is a complete BOSS. She raised the bar by creating 4 different hair looks to pair with Rylees wardrobe and as if that weren’t enough she jumped in several times just to do what needed to be done outside of the hair department. Such a pro. Surprisingly I stared the makeup artist roll square in the face and handled some biz last minute and thank goodness we all lived to tell the tale. Both Rylee and Katie are incredible team players who bring with them professionalism and a truly positive vibe. It is collaborations like this with people like this that keep me growing and connected to photography. For this alone… I will forever be grateful.

STYLED GOLDEN SUNSET FAMILY PORTRAITS

Meet Amy, Ryan, Kellen and Rhyse, the Rawlins Fam and their styled sun soaked family portrait session! Amy and Ryan are an awesome parenting team and their boys are good boys with bright spirits! Kellen the eldest is sweet and smart. Rhyse the youngest is awesome and as fiery as that red hair of his. You would never know it just looking at them but this couple has flown over some major life hurdles together and are truly stronger now than ever. Amy was diagnosed with Lupus before they were even engaged, years later received a kidney from her twin brother for a successful transplant and then proceeded to have not one but TWO healthy baby boys. Though this was very much a part of her life it in no way defines her and she truly let the past be the past once she was healthy. I rarely even hear her mention this time in her life now, she is a strong, aware, grounded person. This will forever impress me and that Ryan was right there the whole way. She is totally Super Woman in my eyes and Ryan is like… Prince Charming. So… to celebrate their life and awesome family we went shopping of course! we decked out the boys in funky outfits and just HAD to drape Amy in head to toe Gold sequins. I mean what else would you dress the most beautiful (inside and out) red headed woman surrounded by 3 boys in? Gold sequins is always the answer. Lastly… at the end of the shoot we told the boys to hit the road and I kept Amy behind for a few portraits of just her to show how I see her. She is my amazing Bestie, I love her and that she lets me photograph her when I’m sure she would rather hide.

SUNSET ON FOLSOM LAKE WITH THE HAGERS

This session is as close to home as it gets for me. Nicole is a most beloved childhood girlfriend and her husband Jeremy has come to be very dear to me as well. As Sophomores in the height of our closeness Nicole’s dad got transferred to Oklahoma and we were positive life was over. It was the first time a significant change had entered my young life and all at once my sweet buddy was gone. We began writing letters and spending 2 weeks each summer together until we grew up and adult life began. Oddly… even though we were miles apart we began to get closer and closer. We talk on the phone often, were both in each others weddings and now once a year we meet in a different part of the US to work together (both photographers)! But before all that.. my photography business had begun growing here in California and half way across the states Nicole and Jeremy were going through the gamut of trials and tribulations to begin their family. After years of tests, treatments, lose, extraordinary expenses and adoption madness, their phone rang. A baby boy had just been born and was in need of a Mom and Dad. They hung up the phone, drove several hours to the hospital, met their new son and within a short three day period they arrived back home as a small perfect family. Finally, everything made sense and their life had begun again. Their son Jax is breathtaking and mean that in a literal sense, when she sent the first Jax pic to me I gasped! He literally took my breath away… I mean look at him! Look at his beautiful, bright, perfect face and his big blue eyes! Even through the screen of my phone and hundreds miles away I could feel how special he was and how happy he had made my dear friends. He is clearly the reason nothing else worked for them and is exactly where he was designed to be. Thank you Nicole, Jeremy and Jax for allowing me to spend the evening with you in the sun on the beach right here where Nicole and I became friends. N.A.M.A.H.E.F. (you had to be there…)

STYLED EDITORIAL IN THE FOOTHILLS

There is a dream team thing going on here with these styled editorial sessions. The main and most important ingredient is hands down Stella + Parker Revival who provide each styling element, each garment piece, all the vehicles and in most cases the fun locations too! They are notorious for wrangling in their adored customers to model their garment lines just as they did in this session with Josh the cutest cutie of all cuties who pretty much killed his very first session in front of the camera. Monica is the radiant beauty opposite Josh who always impresses and normally steals the show. She is a regular here at PGP and very much loved by us all. Check out her style blog Monica Miyagi . This session started out as an impromptu thing to be squeezed in before the sunrise and our first coffee fix but when I arrived and saw what Deb and Deanna (the sister duo) at SPR had all laid out I gladly rolled up my sleeves and dove head first into their style magic knowing this wasn’t going to be the quick session we had earlier discussed (grin). Deb had hand drawn a sketch of each location/setup with a detailed list of every garment item for each model. HAND DRAWN! They neatly packed each outfit in brown paper sacks and had the bed of her truck full of these bags and props! We shot in each spot just as she wanted but my FAVORITE part was actually mimicking each drawing and posing the models just as her sketch showed for a fun nod to her hard work. I’ve included the sketches with the coordinating photos to show you the brilliance that is Deb! There is no match for her outstanding creativity… maybe except her big heart!
